Privacy Policy

1. Data we do not collect

The following data stays on your Mac and is never sent anywhere:

• Audio recorded from your microphone
• System audio captured from other apps (during meeting recording)
• Screen recordings
• Transcribed text
• The history of your recordings, transcripts, and meetings
• Any text you dictate into other apps via the Whisper Plus hotkey

Transcription is performed locally using WhisperKit, an on-device implementation of OpenAI's Whisper model. No audio leaves your device for transcription.

2. Network connections we do make

Whisper Plus makes outbound network requests in three specific cases, all transparent and necessary:

• Model downloads. When you select a Whisper model larger than the bundled tiny model, the app downloads it from Hugging Face. Only the model files are transferred. No audio, no personal data.
• StoreKit / App Store. If you purchased the app on the Mac App Store, Apple's StoreKit framework communicates with Apple's servers to validate the purchase. This is handled by macOS; we do not see or store the data.
• AI Companion (optional, your own API key). If you enable the AI Companion feature and provide your own API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.), your selected text or screenshot is sent to that provider — and only that provider — by your explicit action. We do not proxy, log, or intermediate the request. The API key is stored only in your Mac's Keychain. You can remove it at any time.

3. macOS permissions Whisper Plus requests

• Microphone — required to record your voice. Only active during a recording session.
• Screen Recording — required for meeting capture (the bilateral audio + video feature). Only active when you start a meeting recording.
• Accessibility — required if you want the auto-paste feature (push-to-talk inserts the transcript directly into the focused text field). Optional; you can use clipboard-only mode instead.
• Input Monitoring — required for global hotkeys (the push-to-talk and meeting hotkeys). Lets the app know when you press the configured keys, even when it is not the active app.

All permissions are managed by macOS in System Settings → Privacy & Security. You can revoke them at any time; Whisper Plus will not collect data on whether you granted or revoked them.

4. Where files are stored on your Mac

• Meeting recordings: ~/Movies/Whisper Plus/
• Downloaded Whisper models: ~/Library/Application Support/io.brotto.whisperplus/
• Transcript history and preferences: managed by macOS in the app's sandboxed container
• API keys (if you use AI Companion): macOS Keychain

You may delete these files at any time. Uninstalling the app via Finder removes the app itself; the recordings and transcripts you created remain in ~/Movies/Whisper Plus/ so you don't lose your data.

5. Children's privacy

Whisper Plus is not directed at children under 13. We do not collect personal data from anyone, including children.

6. International users

Since we do not collect or process any personal data, there are no cross-border data transfers to disclose. GDPR, LGPD, and CCPA obligations regarding data subject rights are inherently satisfied: there is no data about you to access, correct, port, or delete on our side.

7. Changes to this policy

If we change this privacy policy, the updated version will be published at https://whisper.brotto.io/privacy.html with a new "Last updated" date. Material changes will also be announced in the app's release notes.
